Studio Retail
Referral, Wholesale or Private Label: Which Route Fits Your Studio?
Compare the cash commitment, responsibilities and earning model of four product partnerships before choosing your first studio offer.
Direct answer
- Choose referral when you want to recommend products without buying inventory.
- Choose wholesale when you can hold stock and run a small retail operation.
- Consider co-branding or your own label when demand, budget and launch responsibilities are clearer.
Who this is for
You own a yoga or Pilates studio, run a boutique gym, or lead a wellness community. Members ask about products, but you do not yet know whether you want to become a retailer. The first decision is how much responsibility to take on, not which logo to put on a legging.
Compare the four routes
| Route | Potential return | Upfront commitment | Who holds the stock? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Referral | Agreed commission on eligible orders | Your time and any promotion costs | The brand under its programme |
| Wholesale | Retail sales less all associated costs | Purchase of stock | Your studio |
| Co-branding | An agreed collaboration model and distinctive offer | Samples and agreed production | Confirm in the agreement |
| Own label | Sales under your own identity | Development and bulk production | Your studio after delivery |
A comparison is only useful when it includes what happens after the first sale. Ask who answers a sizing question, who receives a return, who pays delivery costs and what happens to unsold products.
When referral is a sensible first step
Referral fits a studio with member trust but limited storage, retail staffing or appetite for an upfront order. Members buy through the brand’s agreed ordering route, and the studio earns commission on eligible purchases.
Before sharing a recommendation, confirm the tracking method, attribution window, qualifying products, treatment of refunds and payout schedule. Test the purchase path yourself. A code that staff cannot explain or a link that does not track is not a workable programme.
For UK-facing promotions, clearly identify commercial recommendations. The ASA’s affiliate marketing guidance explains the advertising disclosure expectations. Agree how this will appear in posts, email and any member-facing material before launch.
When wholesale makes more sense
Wholesale lets members see or handle products in the studio and buy during a familiar visit. It also gives you operational work: receiving stock, recording sales, explaining products and managing customers.
Start with a small product edit that staff can explain. Estimate sales conservatively and separate cash recovery from accounting margin. A product with an attractive unit margin can still leave cash tied up in slow-selling sizes.
Track opening stock, units sold, returns and closing stock for each style. Do not assume a supplier will buy back leftovers unless that commitment exists in writing.
Co-branding and your own label are different decisions
A Formwynn collaboration connects an existing product identity with your community. It still needs agreement on what can change, brand permissions, approvals and who will launch the offer.
Your own label places your identity at the centre. It can require material sourcing, fit decisions, sampling, labels and packaging. Studio Label Works coordinates that product work; completed production is delivered in bulk. It is not automatically a member-by-member fulfilment service.
Use a first conversation to remove uncertainty
Write down your audience, your intended launch moment and the amount of stock you are comfortable holding. Then describe who on your team could manage retail. These facts are more useful than a long wishlist of products.
For example, a teacher with an online community and no retail space may prefer referral. A studio with reception staff and a clear class-related need may explore wholesale. A studio with a defined launch and demonstrated interest may be ready to price a collaboration. These are planning examples, not customer case studies or predicted outcomes.
Studio Label Works perspective
We would rather help you choose a manageable first commitment than push you into production too early. Compare our four partnership routes or browse the current product collection before sending a brief. Rates, availability, minimums and delivery terms are confirmed individually.
FAQ
Is referral genuinely risk-free?
It removes the inventory purchase, not all risk. Time, member trust, programme eligibility and returns still matter.
Can we begin with referral and move to custom products?
Yes. Use what you learn about member interest to shape a later brief, but treat a custom launch as a new commercial commitment.
